Cubans have mobilized on social media in search of information to identify and locate the relatives of a man who was found dead on the morning of this Tuesday in the Alamar neighborhood in Havana.
The deceased, an elderly man, was found by a man in the Olimar pool, in zone 1 of the populous urban settlement of the municipality of Habana del Este.
"Please, any relative or friend who knows this gentleman, I just found him deceased in the Olimar pool, in zone 1," wrote Yoel Quintanal on Facebook, where dozens of people mourned the sad news.
In response to his call for help, several people commented and confirmed that the man is from Alamar, from building 855 in zone 24; his family is from the eastern region, but he lived alone in the capital and was married to a woman who passed away a few months ago.
A woman stated that the man "was having a hard time," as she "always saw him eating things from the garbage bins and collecting things." Meanwhile, a man urged the author of the post to report it to the Police.
Until the publication of this note, the identity of the deceased man is still unknown, as well as the causes and circumstances in which he lost his life.
Due to the worsening economic crisis in Cuba caused by the government's failed policies, poverty rates have skyrocketed in recent years, and the number of homeless individuals has multiplied, primarily affecting the elderly, sick, and disabled, who struggle to survive on the streets, searching for daily sustenance even in garbage and sleeping in doorways and other places.
Several cases of homeless individuals found dead on the streets have been reported on social media. Last April, the body of a homeless man remained for hours on a corner in the city of Holguín after being discovered by local residents.
An elderly man was found dead on a garbage dump in the city of Santa Clara, and his body remained there for several hours before the authorities removed it. According to residents of the area, the man was feeding on the trash.
