A young man lost his life and his brother is in critical condition after a car collided with the horse-drawn carriage they were driving in the city of Santiago de Cuba early this Sunday morning.
The tragic incident occurred around 3:50 AM, when a car belonging to the Attorney General's Office (FGR) collided with the rear of a horse-drawn carriage in the Santa Teresa neighborhood in El Caney, reported the journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.
At the scene, one of the coachmen died instantly, while his brother was taken urgently to the Juan Bruno Zayas Clinical Surgical Hospital with serious injuries and, according to family sources, he is in critical condition.
The driver of the car, a Hyundai with the license plate number B 030 353, belonging to the Prosecutor's Office, also suffered injuries.
The strong collision caused almost total destruction of the car, while the other vehicle also sustained severe damage after rolling several times on the pavement. According to some people, the driver of the car was speeding when he crashed into the other vehicle early in the morning.
"The car overturned completely after rear-ending the brothers who were in the car," Mayeta stated in her post.
In the comments, dozens of people expressed their sorrow over the death of the coachman and the seriousness of his brother's condition, who is still fighting for his life.
"Oh, my God! What a strong pain this tragedy has caused in the family, my child. You are with God, my good boy. Rest in peace, my little love of my heart. I will always love you. Recovery for my other cousin of my life. May God give you strength, my love," expressed Mirka León Ruano, who identified herself as a cousin of the young people.
The identity of the deceased and the other injured in the accident has not been revealed. The condition of the horse or horses that were pulling the carriage has also not been disclosed.
In another fatal incident that occurred last Thursday in Santiago de Cuba, two men died in a motorcycle accident near the Cubalse store on the El Caney road.
Days earlier, a state vehicle collided with a tractor's cart in the municipality of San Juan y Martínez, Pinar del Río. The driver of the car and another person were seriously injured from the impact.
According to official statistics, there was a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 fewer) in Cuba during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023. However, incidents on the country's roads and streets continue, and the frequency with which they occur and their serious consequences are concerning.
