Cuban gardener Yasiel Puig reported to the training of Tiburones de La Guaira this Monday, after they became champions of the Venezuelan Baseball League last year.

“Caballo Loco,” as he is also known, was an offensive pillar for the litoralenses last season, batting .418 in 26 at-bats, including 10 home runs to break the 38-year drought without championships for La Guaira.

The former Major Leaguer with the Los Angeles Dodgers comes from playing with El Águila de Veracruz in the Mexican Baseball League, where he had an average of .314 with 18 home runs and 43 RBIs.

With Tiburones de La Guaira, the Cienfuegos player also won the Caribbean Series of Baseball Miami 2024 by defeating the Tigres del Licey from the Dominican Republic 3-0.

The Venezuelan team was crowned Caribbean champion as a franchise for the first time in its history.

The joy of victory and the festive atmosphere around the stadium, with Venezuelan drums, led him to write on X: "This music kept me happy since I arrived. This is the only way I wanted to leave the stadium. Thank you guys for this surprise and for the unconditional support."

After that triumph, he dedicated words to Venezuela and promised to return. “Thank you Venezuela for so much love. Love gave me strength; I felt all of you every moment. We did it as a team for you. I love you, and I’ll see you in October,” he stated, and starting this Tuesday, he is fulfilling his promise.

Los de La Guaira begin the preseason as visitors, next Sunday, October 6th at 2:00 p.m., against Magallanes, and Puig is considered one of their main figures to retain the Championship.
