Venezuelan Sharks blank Dominican Tigres and win their first Caribbean Series in Miami

The Tiburones de La Guaira won the Miami 2024 Baseball Caribbean Series on Friday by defeating the Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Republic 3-0.

Heteam Venezuelan champion of the Caribbean as a franchise for the first time in its history.

It is the eighth victory of a Venezuelan club in the tournament since 2009.

Although no Cuban team competed, there were six Cuban players in the final.

One of them was Yasiel Puig, who hit for a hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, but was injured and had to be replaced by pinch-runner Odubel Herrera, who scored the first run.

The Cienfuegos native left the stadium with the Cup and took photos with fans who were waiting for him to celebrate.

The hero of the game was starter Ricardo Pinto, who pitched 5.2 innings in which he struck out six and allowed four hits.

The Tigres del Licey, champions of the last edition, could not repeat their victory for the second consecutive time. However, they are the historical leaders of the Caribbean with 11 titles. The Dominican Republic is the country with the most victories to its credit, with 22.

Panama came in third place and Curacao in fourth.

The tournament was attended by the professional baseball teams champions of the tournaments of Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Curacao, Panama and Nicaragua attended as guests.​

In November, theCuban authorities confirmed that the national baseball team was not invited.

This edition of the Caribbean Series, the 66th, was played from February 1 to 9, 2024 at LoanDepot Park in Miami.

It was the first time, since 1991, that the Caribbean Series was held outside of Latin America, and the first time that it was held in a Major League Baseball stadium.
