Whoopi Goldberg on Celia Cruz: "I always wanted to be like her."

"I always wanted to be like her," said the actress during the event "Historic Change: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Celia Cruz."

Actress Whoopi Goldberg highlighted the strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit of Celia Cruz, as well as the enormous influence that the "Queen of Salsa" had on multiple generations in the United States.

"I always wanted to be like her," said the actress during the event "Historic Change: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Celia Cruz."

He argued that he had never seen a woman like the Cuban, who "gave him so much when he was young."

"I had never seen anyone like her, who resembled her, someone who didn't care what others thought of her, she didn't care if other people understood, what she wanted to do was give, and everything she gave I received," Goldberg stated.

She recounts that when she got to know her, she was "dumbfounded" and "didn't know what to do because there was a woman who was magnificent. Nothing made her feel bad, that's how I wanted to be," she expressed.

In her anecdote, she explains that when she finally met Celia, she said, "I want to be like you," to which the Cuban salsa singer responded in Spanish, "No, be yourself. Be the best you, because that's where the power is; when you're your best version, no one can withstand that."

The family of the iconic Cuban singer expressed their gratitude to the actress and comedian for her heartfelt words during the celebration.

Whoopi's tribute, in which she described Celia as a symbol of empowerment and authenticity, also moved those present at the event to remember and celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most influential figures in Latin music.

In September 2020, Hispanic Heritage Month, the actress once again praised Celia's legacy.

Her admiration for the Cuban singer has a long history. In statements by Whoopi Goldberg to the New York Post in 2003, shortly after Celia's death, she said that she had been very special to her since she was young and explained the reasons.

Since August, a coin featuring the image of the iconic Cuban singer Celia Cruz (1925-2003) has been officially circulating in the United States as part of the American Women Quarters 2024 program, through which the government of this country honors five illustrious female figures from the nation.
