Two Cuban citizens, aged 38 and 40 respectively, were arrested by the Police of Uruguay after being detected bringing illegal products into the country, and one of them attempted to bribe the agents.

The detention of the Caribbean individuals occurred on the Interbalnearia route, near El Riacho street, in the Neptunia area, a coastal town belonging to the Canelones department.

The Uruguayan media outlet Teledoce confirmed that the Police Headquarters in Canelones stated that it was the PADO Group, who were carrying out control actions in the area, that detained the Cubans.

Once they confiscated the vehicle, they found merchandise "illegally imported into the country," including: 145 liters of gasoline, cold cuts, coffee, 1,500 cartons of cigarettes, toothpaste, soap, chocolates, ticholos, alcoholic beverages, and creams.

Likewise, the authorities reported that during the arrest, the 38-year-old Cuban attempted to bribe the police officers by offering "the delivery of goods in exchange for his freedom."

The police indicated that this person was located due to a similar incident.

The Atlántida Research Area and the Prosecutor's Office began the study of the case, anticipating that the sanctions would be announced in the coming hours.

In July 2023, four Cubans were arrested in the department of Maldonado, accused of smuggling goods and receiving stolen property. The arrest occurred following the detention of two Uruguayan drivers who were transporting large sums of cash in their vehicles. The investigation led the police to nearby homes, where they seized goods and arrested the Cubans, who now face precautionary measures such as weekly appearances at a police station.

That same month, two Cubans were sentenced to prison in Canelones for the theft of pigs. These men were illegally transporting 15 pigs without permission, and the investigation revealed that another group of animals was at a nearby rural establishment. Both were sentenced to prison terms of 13 and 4 months, respectively, under supervised release.

In August 2024, more arrests of Cubans were recorded in Uruguay. In Maldonado, two men aged 49 and 25 were arrested during a police operation while transporting smuggled goods, including alcoholic beverages and cigarettes of Brazilian origin. Both faced sentences of 3 to 5 months of probation.

Also, two young Cubans, a man and a woman, were arrested in Canelones for stealing cartons of eggs from a farm where they worked. The arrested individuals were selling the eggs at different locations in the area and were sentenced to 12 months of probation for the aggravated crime of theft.
