Hurricane Milton: 3 good and bad things about having a trailer when a cyclone hits Florida.

Having a camper in Florida during hurricane season guarantees you mobility. Remember that you need to evacuate quickly because it is vulnerable to winds, and you should have your fuel reserve so that your escape doesn't get complicated.

The arrival of Hurricane Milton in Florida, with category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, has generated the largest exodus of people in recent decades.

One of the things that hurts the most right now is leaving your home behind, along with the material possessions that you've worked so hard to gather. However, there are residents in Florida who don't have that problem because they live in mobile homes.

In September, the Cuban TikToker Jorge Drake (@jorge_drake1992) visited Miami and showed what the inside of a trailer looks like. The rent costs 800 dollars a month and the space is quite small, but very cozy.

"Look how pretty it is. This is a bus, you start it up and off you go," said the Cuban, pointing out how practical it seemed to live in a motorhome, as long as it was for a couple without children who didn't have to be tied to daily routines.

The post generated dozens of comments on social media, and among them, this one stood out: "Very beautiful, but a cyclone will take that away." Immediately, another person reacted: "It's perfect to go to a safe place during a hurricane. When it's all over, you come back home and park your little trailer in the yard."

Not everyone can have a home like this to dedicate to leisure, to travel discovering places in the summer while spending the rest of the year stable in their house. However, more and more people are choosing that adventurous lifestyle and opting to buy a mobile home.

Here are three advantages and disadvantages of facing a hurricane if you own or rent a trailer in Miami.

The good thing about having a camper during cyclone season:

  1. Fast mobility: Con una casa rodante, puedes salir del área de peligro sin depender de hoteles o refugios. Tu hogar se mueve contigo, lo que te da la ventaja de reaccionar rápido.
  2. Avoid flooding:You can head to higher ground and escape areas that tend to flood. You are not stuck in a fixed zone, which gives you the flexibility to look for a safe place.
  3. Freedom of movement:After the hurricane, you can return quickly or move to where the conditions improve. You have the freedom to choose your destination based on the circumstances.

The downside of having a trailer during hurricane season:

  1. Fragility against the wind:Recreational vehicles are vulnerable to strong winds, especially in cases like Hurricane Milton, which can exceed 250 km/h. Such winds could overturn your RV or seriously damage it, so you should be among the first to evacuate.
  2. Fuel shortage:In the midst of a massive evacuation, getting gasoline can be difficult in Florida. If you run out of fuel, you are left adrift in a dangerous situation. Always keep a reserve for hurricane times.
  3. Route saturation:Even if you have mobility, the roads filled with people evacuating can leave you stuck in traffic, putting your ability to escape on time at risk. Look for various routes and never leave your escape for the last moment.

Those who have a motorhome in Florida these days during Hurricane Milton have a very valuable mobility option that ensures comfort during the time they are evacuated. However, they must keep in mind that they face great risks if they do not take the necessary precautions in time.
