A judge in Miami set a bail of $30,000 for a 47-year-old woman identified as Susej Calcines, who was arrested following a hit-and-run incident that claimed the lives of a couple of elderly people.

Calcines faces two charges of vehicular homicide and two additional charges for leaving the scene of an accident. However, the police reviewed the cameras, followed the route, and managed to track his car, a black 2007 Mercedes Benz GL450.

Calcines was later arrested and confessed to being the perpetrator of the act. She is now facing multiple charges for the crime.

Judge Mindy S. Glazer set Calcines' bail at $30,000 and ordered that he be placed under house arrest with an ankle monitor. She also prohibited him from driving.

According to police reports consulted by Seven News Miami, the accused claimed not to remember the incident and cited an undisclosed medical condition.

The woman has a clean driving record, and this is her first accident.

During his appearance before the court on Tuesday, prosecutors expressed uncertainty about whether to proceed with the vehicular homicide charges, as they need to establish whether Calcines was driving recklessly.

However, they confirmed that they will proceed with the charges related to leaving the scene of the fatal accident, which occurred on Sunday when the Hialeah Police responded to reports of an incident on East Eighth Avenue near 48th Street.

Investigators indicate that Calcines was driving his black Mercedes SUV south when he struck Julio Hernández, 87, and Manuela Hernández, 84, two elderly Cubans who were crossing the street.

Both victims were declared dead at the scene and identified by their daughter, a woman named María.

In Florida, the penalties for fleeing the scene of an accident that has resulted in death or serious bodily injury are severe. The offense can be classified as a second-degree felony, which carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison or probation, as well as a fine of $10,000.

Legally, anyone involved in an accident must stay at the scene, check that all drivers and passengers are okay, and call the police immediately.
