Family and friends said goodbye at the Memorial Plan funeral home in Miami to Julio and Manuela Hernández, a pair of elderly Cubans who lost their lives after being hit by a vehicle last Sunday in Hialeah, reported Telemundo 51.

The Hernández, who had been married for over 60 years, were known for going out every afternoon to play the lottery, but their routine ended tragically when they were struck by a driver who fled the scene.

The funeral service was held last Thursday in Miami.

The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on October 13, when the couple was attempting to cross East 8th Avenue near 47th Street in Hialeah. Julio, 87, and Manuela, 84, died at the accident scene.

The driver involved, Susej Calcines, 47, was arrested the next day and is now facing charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of the accident.

According to the police report, Calcines did not assist the victims nor provide information after the impact.

Her vehicle, a black Mercedes Benz GL450, was tracked by the police to an apartment complex in northwest Miami-Dade, where the woman was identified as the suspect.

During his arrest, Calcines claimed not to remember the accident, citing an undisclosed medical condition.

Although the woman had no history of reckless driving, she faces serious legal consequences. Judge Mindy S. Glazer imposed a bond of $30,000 and placed her under house arrest with an ankle monitor, in addition to prohibiting her from driving.

María, daughter of the Hernández, was the one who identified them after the accident.

In Florida, leaving the scene of an accident that results in death can carry penalties of up to 15 years in prison, in addition to substantial fines.
