Tropical Storm Oscar has just formed and is threatening to impact eastern Cuba within the next 24 hours. According to the initial official report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Oscar will bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the southeastern Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and could affect the eastern region of Cuba, where no official alert has been issued yet due to a nationwide blackout that has left the entire country without electricity.

This massive blackout has disrupted both internet connectivity and communication channels, making it difficult to disseminate crucial information about the storm. Without access to basic services, the Cuban population is facing the impending arrival of a potentially dangerous weather phenomenon without clear warnings or means to prepare adequately.

Trajectory forecast for Oscar / NOAA

Intense rainfall is expected to reach the eastern region of Cuba on Sunday, worsening an already precarious situation. Oscar, with sustained winds of 65 km/h and moving west at 21 km/h, has the potential to cause flooding in vulnerable areas.

So far, Cuban authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the storm, and the extent of the blackout is complicating efforts to coordinate an appropriate response. The population is urged to take precautions, stay informed by any available means, and watch for updates from the National Hurricane Center.
