A Cuban woman in the United States, known on TikTok as @rieteconary, broke down in tears while talking about the current situation in Cuba. In the video, the woman expressed her frustration and pain regarding the severe situation the island is facing, especially the lack of electricity and food.
"I really can't find the right words, I don’t know what term to use to talk about the Cuban government and what they are doing right now with Cuba," @rieteconary begins to say, who could not hold back her tears. The creator pointed out that the lack of electricity has caused many Cubans to lose the few food items they have. "It's an abuse, something inhumane what they have. Food has spoiled for relatives we haven't heard from because they don’t have electricity," she explained between sobs.
The woman also made her desperation for the uncertainty that reigns on the island clear, where the situation seems to have no solution in sight. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but something has to happen. You [the government] have to leave. It can't be that we keep going like this, we can't continue like this anymore,” she exclaimed, directing her words of frustration toward the Cuban authorities.
The video has not only touched the hearts of many, but it has also sparked comments from Cubans both on the island and abroad, who identify with its suffering. Some users expressed their own pain and the anguish of not knowing about their loved ones.
"I wonder if the members of the military and their families live under the same conditions as the rest of the people. How is it possible that with all this they do not unite with their people?" commented a user, to which @rieteconary responded with the same question: "That’s what I wonder too."
Another follower added: “My poor mother is cooking with stones because there is no gas or electricity, and all the meat went bad”; while another commented: “I can’t sleep at night thinking about my mom, and I'm eating little due to the great anguish I have in my heart.” These phrases are just a sample of the widespread helplessness experienced by the Cuban people, both those on the island and those living abroad.
The frustration of Cubans is evident in the hundreds of comments accompanying the TikTok video. "It's not easy, Ary, we're all here with our souls broken, without food, dying in hospitals, and people in the countryside are worse off, honey, it's tough," said one follower, while another lamented: "It breaks my heart to see the comments from mothers with children covered in rashes, complaining that their milk and yogurt went bad, like everything else."
Cubans are not only facing prolonged shortages of food and medicine, but also long hours without electricity, which has forced many families to cook with firewood and lose the few perishable products they had. As one user commented: “Cuba hurts, and a lot.”
The video by @rieteconary has put into words and tears the pain of a people who no longer know what else to do to survive amid so much adversity. The helplessness of not being able to help their loved ones from abroad and the lack of hope within the island are driving Cubans to raise their voices more and more, in search of a solution to a crisis that seems endless.
The situation described in the video by @rieteconary reflects the reality of many Cuban families affected by the severe energy crisis shaking the country. At dawn this Tuesday, official sources and the Electric Union of Cuba provided an update on the electrical situation. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, 70.89% of customers in Cuba already have electric service; in Pinar del Río, one of the most affected provinces, the restoration of electric supply has begun after more than three days without power. The Electric Union (UNE) of Cuba also reported that unit 4 of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Thermoelectric Plant in Cienfuegos is in the process of being restarted.
