Pressured to maintain connectivity and facilitate the arrival of tourists to the island, the Cuban regime is negotiating to keep flights between Luanda and Havana operational, which resumed in 2022 and are at risk of being suspended once again.

The Cuban Aviation Corporation S.A. held an important meeting on Tuesday with representatives of TAAG Angola Airlines, aimed at resuming flights between the two cities. This initiative seeks to create new opportunities for tourism and promote cultural exchanges between the two countries, they stated in a Facebook post.

Key figures from the airline participated in the meeting, including Antonio Mutondo, Commercial Director; Joelson Vasconcelo, Director of Network & Planning; Antonio José Feliciano, Director of Operations; and Bernardo Aosta from the TAAG office in Havana.

It is expected that soon there will be announcements regarding progress on the resumption of these flights, which ceased operations in October, within the context of the crisis affecting all sectors in Cuba.

TAAG operated flights between Luanda and Havana continuously from 1984 until 2020, when the pandemic forced the cessation of operations. They resumed in 2022 with biweekly frequencies and later increased to weekly flights.

According to the Telegram channel of José Martí Airport and Ecasa, TAAG Angola Airlines had been operating flights to Havana until last month.

Cuba faces challenges in the tourism sector, with figures showing a decline in the number of visitors, and cannot afford to lose connectivity with other countries that supply tourists.

According to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), between January and July 2024, the island recorded 1,905,644 travelers, representing a decrease of 15,263 visitors compared to the same period the previous year. This trend is concerning, particularly in light of the growing number of tourists being drawn to nearby destinations such as Punta Cana and Cancun.
