Discover how much this Latino saved in five years in the United States and why today he has nothing.

"I didn't save anything my first year; I had to cover the expenses that were incurred for me when I came to this country."

Yair Miranda, a TikTok user known as @yairmiranda123, decided to answer one of the questions he gets asked the most: “How much money have I saved in the 5 years I’ve been living here in the United States?” In his video, Yair shared that during his first year, he couldn’t save anything, as he had to cover the expenses of his arrival in the country. However, in the following four years, he managed to save between $14,000 and $15,000 each year, totaling $60,000.

To save money, he explained that he has made several sacrifices, such as sleeping in the living room of his house, which allows him to pay only $200 in rent and spend the minimum on essential items. However, Yair also revealed that he does not have access to those savings, as he relied on his family in his home country, and they used the money.

User reactions were immediate. Many expressed surprise, while some laughed in disbelief. Comments like “You had $60,000” and “I saved a million dollars in 5 years” reflect the astonishment of some. Others questioned whether that amount is truly significant: “$60,000 is very little for 5 years” and “Only $14,000? That friend is mistaken.” Several users also shared their own experiences and challenges with saving in the United States. One remarked, “I’ve been here for 20 years and have saved nothing”; another added, “The rent is only $200 for him, but I pay $1,200 because I have two babies.”

Some expressed solidarity with Yair regarding trust in family: “It’s true, it really sucks to be robbed,” while others advised him to invest his money instead of merely saving it: “Money shouldn’t just be saved, my friend; it should be invested to help it grow…”. There were also those who focused on the funnier details, like the appearance of his food in the video: “I can’t believe the door has a pen,” and “Take the feather off your chicken. Haha.”
