On TikTok, a young Latino, @jotaisac, has gone viral by sharing what he calls the "true American dream."
In an ironic tone and amidst laughter, the TikToker shows off his dark circles and comments, "Yeah, yeah, come to the United States... come on over," before describing how work life in the U.S. has taken its toll on him, with long hours and a lack of sleep.
Joking about Americans who "walk like zombies," @jotaisac reveals that in their new lifestyle, "you don't sleep, you have no social life... people move around like robots."
His followers began commenting on their experiences or sharing their opinions, filling the video with responses. Some added humor to the situation: "I’m also a zombie in Chile, it's the same here!" or “That's why it's the ‘American Dream,’ because we don't sleep,” while others urged him not to complain so much. "Don't complain, at least here you can buy what you need," one user chimed in, to which @jotaisac responded with laughter: "That’s what they say."
Others challenge him to return if it’s so tough, or claim that everywhere works the same. "If it’s so hard, what are you doing there?" someone asks, to which @jotaisac sarcastically replies, "To run an errand." There were also those who expressed solidarity and told him that every effort has its reward. Amidst all the comments, one sums up what many think: "That’s the real American Dream… being tired all day."
The video has amassed thousands of likes and sparked a debate about work and sacrifice in the pursuit of a better life, making it clear that, for some, the "American Dream" is not what it seems.
