A tourist was mugged on Friday in Santiago de Cuba by a young man who snatched her phone.
According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the woman was assaulted on Pérez Andrés Street, in the Los Olmos neighborhood of the capital municipality.
The thief was intercepted by a group of young people and detained by the community until the police arrived. The officers "had to use force because he was resisting arrest," the Facebook post specifies.
Sources indicate that the criminal resides near the terminal on 4th Street, a place that the reporter described as a "den of criminals who operate in this area, pickpocketing people traveling by bus and trucks to various municipalities in Santiago."
"Attacks on tourists are on the rise in Santiago de Cuba," emphasized Mayeta.
In early April, a foreigner was stabbed in Santiago de Cuba in an attempt to steal his scooter.
The victim was taken in a police patrol car to the provincial hospital Saturnino Lora, where he arrived covered in blood but conscious, accompanied by a girl who was with him at the time of the assault. He had to undergo surgery due to the severity of his injuries.
A neighbor from the area stated that the stabbing occurred at the corner of her house, where there is a bakery, and left a "pool" of blood at the scene.
