The National Command of Civil Defense has decided to establish the Informative Phase across the entire eastern region of Cuba this Saturday due to the heavy rain that is currently occurring.
The phase came into effect at 10:00 AM for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, and Las Tunas.
The Civil Defense reports to the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) that the day before, it issued a warning about a trough over the Atlantic Ocean, which is associated with strong clusters of showers, rainfall, and thunderstorms approaching the eastern tip of Cuba.
The trough extends to the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles and the seas north of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
In addition, an extensive area of low pressure is developing in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, accompanied by abundant cloudiness, with the possibility of a tropical cyclonic system forming in the coming days.
This situation "will increase cloudiness with downpours, rains, and thunderstorms starting today in the provinces of the eastern region," the official statement specifies.
On Friday, INSMET issued an Early Warning Advisory due to atmospheric and oceanic conditions favorable for the formation of a low-pressure area in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which could impact the Island in the coming days.
The agency emphasized that, regardless of tropical development, rain and thunderstorms are imminent, especially in the eastern region, which has already experienced significant rainfall in the last days of October.
Dr. Miriam Teresita Llanes Monteagudo, head of the Forecasting Center at INSMET, advised the public to stay informed and follow guidelines regarding this weather situation, which falls within the most active hurricane season in the last 30 years in the Atlantic.
Two weeks ago, Hurricane Oscar struck eastern Cuba, resulting in at least eight deaths and two people reported missing. Residents reported that no one warned them about the weather phenomenon, amid a widespread blackout that prevented them from accessing information from the media.
