A Cuban in the United States, @driven369 on TikTok, has caused a stir online by criticizing the exorbitant prices of cakes in Cuban bakeries, stating that they cost "more than in Dubai."
In his video, he claims that in these establishments, cakes can cost between 45 and 50 dollars, while in supermarkets like Publix, they are available for 20 or 25 dollars.
With his characteristic sarcasm, @driven369 states that Cuban cake is "number one in tons of sugar and killing diabetics." He criticizes the obsession of some Cubans in the U.S. with these sweets and asserts that Cuban culture has an "addiction to sugar" from childhood, which, according to him, does not justify the "inflated" prices charged by bakeries.
Reactions were quick to surface, and the majority of users supported the critique. Among the comments, phrases like, "I completely agree with you," and "The cake for my child's birthday a week ago cost $150 and was slightly larger than a flan," stood out. One user remarked, "Here in Massachusetts, the most expensive cake costs $30 on sale." Another user sarcastically added, "At any moment, an oil prince will send someone to fetch a cake from Hialeah."
Nevertheless, some defended the flavor and tradition of Cuban cake against supermarket options: “But you know the quality isn’t the same because a flan from Publix is nothing like a homemade one”; “Cuban meringue is much richer, and that moist cake filled with coconut or custard—those were happy childhood days!”
Others argued that, in the end, the price depends on each person's financial situation: “There is no such thing as an expensive product; some can afford to pay, and others cannot”; “If they sell it at a high price, it's because someone is buying it. Once people stop buying it, they will lower the price.” Someone concluded with a simple, “It's called capitalism.”
The video from @driven369 has sparked debate among Cubans in the U.S., where many are dealing with these prices at Cuban bakeries. It seems that the issue of cakes and their costs will be around for a while.
