The former Cuban pitcher Luis Tiant, who passed away on October 8 at the age of 83, was included this Monday among the eight candidates from the Veterans Committee for induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Caribbean pitcher, who had a remarkable career in the Major Leagues, appears on the ballot for Cooperstown alongside other greats such as Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, John Donaldson, Steve Garvey, Dave Parker, Vic Harris, and Tommy John.
On December 8th, in Dallas, United States, the organization will hold the vote that will determine which nominees achieve immortality. To do this, 75 percent of the 16 voters, whose names will be announced closer to the date, must support their candidacy.
The exaltation ceremony is scheduled for July 27, 2025, where Tiant could join other players selected through the traditional voting process of the North American Baseball Writers' Association, the results of which will be announced on January 21.
During his career in Major League Baseball, he achieved four seasons with 20 wins and won two earned run average titles in the American League.
His final record was 229 wins and 172 losses, with an earned run average of 3.30 and a total of 2,416 strikeouts over 19 years of his career (1964-1982). He was selected to the All-Star Game three times and left an indelible mark as one of the most charismatic and dominant pitchers of his era.
Although Tiant was nominated for the Hall of Fame since 1988, he never managed to be elected through the usual means, despite his outstanding statistics and achievements on the mound, which always sparked controversy.
The inclusion of Luis Tiant on the Classic Era Committee ballot represents an opportunity for recognition for one of the great icons of Cuban baseball, whose career has left a lasting legacy in the sport.
In the historical ranking of Cuban major leaguers compiled by journalist Michel Contreras for CiberCuba, this mound legend was placed fourth overall and first among flame throwers.
