Hurricane Rafael wreaks havoc on baseball stadiums in Artemisa: fallen towers and destroyed roofs

Baseball stadiums in Artemisa have suffered damage following Hurricane Rafael. The collapse of a light tower at the "26 de Julio" stadium and roof losses are among the reported impacts.

Several baseball stadiums in the province of Artemisa were affected following the passage of Hurricane Rafael on Wednesday evening.

The most widely reported incident has been the collapse of one of the lighting towers at the "26 de Julio" stadium in the capital of Artemisa, echoing a similar scene experienced during Hurricane Ian in 2022.

The official digital site Cubadebate shared a video capturing the moment when the structure succumbs to the strong winds of powerful Hurricane Rafael.

According to a report from the local media outlet ARTV on their Facebook profile, one of the major impacts on the sports facility is the loss of roofs.

The website dedicated to sports news, Pelota Cubana, also reported damage to the stadiums in Güira de Melena ('Tricontinental') and San Antonio de los Baños ('Julio Pérez').

Two shared photographs of both baseball venues show how part of their walls collapsed and the loss of their roofs.

Rafael reached category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale as it passed through Cuba. The hurricane made landfall around 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday and left the country as a category 2 storm just before 7:00 p.m. on the same day, near Cabañas Bay in Artemisa.

On social media, users shared graphical evidence of the damage caused by the powerful cyclone in several municipalities of that western region, as well as in Havana and Mayabeque.

According to the Cuban government, the greatest damage is concentrated in Artemisa, particularly affecting hospitals, schools, service centers, homes, roofs, and the electrical network.
