A tragic boating accident in Key West resulted in one death and several serious injuries on Thursday afternoon, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. at North Key West Harbor when a 39-foot Deep Impact yacht, carrying eight people, struck a sandbar and capsized, throwing five of the passengers into the air, reported Telemundo 51.
The injured were assisted and taken to Conch Harbor Marina on Caroline Street, where several boats that witnessed the accident or arrived shortly after helped transport them until emergency services arrived.
Witnesses at the scene provided first aid, including artificial respiration to some of the injured. One of the victims, a woman, sustained a serious fracture in her leg, according to reports from emergency calls.
Cody Alhorn, the dock captain's assistant, told the Miami Herald that one of the boats took the injured woman to shore, while another carried more victims. "When it all happened, we were at the marina and called 911. They weren't scheduled to come here," Alhorn explained.
The FWC has initiated an investigation to clarify the causes of the accident. At this time, the identities and ages of those involved in the incident have not been disclosed.
