A woman who fatally struck a Cuban elderly couple in Hialeah last October and then fled the scene has been formally charged with homicide.

Susej Calcines, 47, was arraigned on Friday in criminal court and faces two charges of vehicular homicide and two charges for leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.

According to records consulted by Telemundo, it was previously believed that prosecutors might not have enough evidence to charge her with vehicular homicide, as they had not been able to establish whether she was driving recklessly.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, October 13, around 7:00 PM. Julio Eduardo Hernández, 87, and Manuela Hernández, 84, were struck by a vehicle while crossing East 8th Avenue. The couple, married for over 60 years, had left their home to purchase a lottery ticket. They died at the scene.

Calcines fled the scene after the accident without offering assistance, but the police reviewed the security cameras and located his vehicle, a black 2007 Mercedes Benz GL450.

Upon being arrested, she told the police that she did not remember the accident. She later confessed to being the one responsible.

"They finished eating and went to play a lottery number here on the corner, and crossing the street, they were struck (...) I went home two minutes later, realized they weren't there, and went out to look for them. When I saw the police, I started running, and they were already dead; they were killed in the same spot," the couple's daughter recounted through tears.

Days after the incident, Judge Mindy S. Glazer set bail for Susej Calcines at $30,000 and ordered her to be placed under house arrest with an ankle monitor. She was also prohibited from driving.

"This is heartbreaking. You have just destroyed a family. An elderly couple, husband and wife, who have managed to build a life and a family here in the U.S., and you have just shattered that and left the scene of the accident without offering any help to these people," expressed Hialeah Police Lieutenant Eddie Rodríguez after the accident.
