Four of the injured in the accident that occurred in Moa, Holguín, where a tractor fell from a bridge on Saturday afternoon, remain in serious condition, while the other seven are stable, according to official sources.
The traffic accident was reported around 5:30 PM on Saturday when a tractor transporting 11 people—eight adults and three minors aged four, 13, and 14—fell off a bridge leading to the Ernesto Che Guevara mining company.
There were no fatalities in the incident, but 11 people traveling in the vehicle sustained injuries: four of them seriously, including a four-year-old girl, while the others suffered minor injuries.
In the latest update on the condition of the injured, released on Saturday night, Dr. Manuel Galbán Blanco, director of the Guillermo Luis Fernández General Hospital in Moa, told the broadcaster La Voz del Níquel that four of the patients remained in critical condition, three of whom had multiple trauma with depressed skull fractures, as well as fractures in their extremities.
The individuals in question are Richelmi Calderón Acosta, 37 years old, a resident of San Germán, who has a skull injury and fractures in the lower limbs; Ricardo Enrique Zaldívar Álvarez, 46, from the Armando Mestre neighborhood in Moa, with skull, tibia, fibula, and humerus fractures; and Yordanis Batista López, also 46 and from the Armando Mestre neighborhood, with a skull fracture. All three were transferred to provincial hospitals.
The doctor explained that four-year-old Alexa Pérez Bidet is reported to be in serious condition, but she only has a humeral fracture and a simple cranial trauma, and is in “good general condition.” Due to her age, the patient was referred to the provincial pediatric hospital for evaluation by specialists, Galbán indicated.
According to reports from the Provincial Health Directorate of Holguín, the incident immediately mobilized combined rescue and salvage teams from the Pedro Sotto Alba and Ernesto Che Guevara industries, as well as Command 30, who acted swiftly to rescue the occupants of the crashed vehicle.
The 11 injured individuals were treated by doctors, nurses, and technicians who were on duty at the Moa hospital, as well as other medical professionals who were summoned to assist with the care of the accident victims, Dr. Galbán specified.
In 2024, the province of Holguín reported more than 290 accidents, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people and injuries to over 310, according to the Cuban News Agency.
