An almendrón sustained severe damage to the rear of the vehicle after being hit on Monday night at the intersection of Vía Blanca and the exit from La Monumental, according to a report on social media from a witness.
"Vía Blanca and La Monumental before reaching the bridge, the vintage car was making its exit, the truck was speeding by and boom, there you have the result of the love they have for each other," wrote David Vladimir Riverón in the Facebook group Accidents Buses & Trucks.
As a result of the impact, the almendrón - a Chevrolet - was left shattered in the back, specifically on the left side.
"The year was ruined for the driver of the almendrón," a commentator stated.
However, the mentioned source revealed that, fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries, and confirmed that those who were in the old vehicle are the same individuals appearing in the photos.
The witness added that the truck, which is barely visible in the published images, only received "a slight bump on the passenger side."
Regarding the causes of the incident, despite the suggestion of alleged speeding by the truck driver, a couple of commentators knowledgeable in the area pointed out that it is a dangerous zone with a history of accidents.
“If it's at the intersection, the one coming from Vía Blanca has the priority, but generally, some of those coming down from Monumental to merge onto Vía Blanca overlook the 'Yield' sign. There have been several accidents in that area, many due to not respecting the 'Yield' sign,” noted an internet user.
"There are many irresponsible people who take the left on that stretch, and if that was the case, there are the consequences," another added.
There were also those who expressed that driving at night in Cuba is becoming increasingly dangerous, as the darkness is compounded by unexpected potholes and the overall poor condition of many roads.
Accidents show no mercy on Cuban roads.
In recent hours, it has been reported that residents of Arroyo Blanco, in the municipality of Jatibonico, Sancti Spíritus, are mourning the death of "Muni," a beloved neighbor who passed away in a traffic accident while riding his scooter.
In another incident that occurred last week, a person died in an accident on Avenida del Puerto in Old Havana following a collision between a polaquito and a taxi.
Without being aware of the updates on recent events, at the beginning of July, Cuban authorities stated that in the first half of 2024, the country recorded 543 fewer incidents than in the same period of the previous year.
In the official television program Mesa Redonda, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Department of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), also reported that there were 81 fewer fatalities (23%) and a reduction of 151 injuries (5%) between January and June of this year, compared to the same period in 2023.
