In the early hours of the morning, temperatures in Cuba dropped, particularly in certain areas of Matanzas, where the thermometer fell below 10 degrees.
According to information from the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET), the early morning was very cold in areas of the western and central regions, from Matanzas to Ciego de Ávila, with minimum temperatures ranging between 13 and 14 degrees Celsius (°C).
The lowest temperature recorded was at the Indio Hatuey weather station in Matanzas, with a reading of 9.7 °C.
In the rest of the country, the night was also cold, with temperatures ranging from 17 to 20 °C, rising in coastal areas.
The INSMET reported that the passage of the first cold front of the season brought some rainfall to the eastern region over the past 24 hours. The highest accumulation was recorded at the weather station in Jamal, Guantánamo, with 19 mm. In the other provinces, conditions remained stable due to the influence of migrating high pressure systems.
For the remainder of the day, the cold front will continue to weaken until it dissipates as it moves away from the national territory.
"On the other hand, the influence of high migratory pressures from the mainland will continue, with a mass of colder, drier, and more stable air that will restrict rainfall in much of the country," the statement specifies.
On Friday morning, there were also cold temperatures in inland areas of Cuba, particularly in the provinces of Mayabeque, Matanzas, and Cienfuegos, with readings below 15 °C.
The lowest value was 12.4 °C in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos province.
Since Thursday, temperatures in the west have dropped below 20 °C following the arrival of the cold front the day before.
On Facebook, the user Yosmelvi Páez Cornell, creator of the channel Aficionados a la Meteorología (AALM), reported that this weekend the coldest air mass would start to have a greater influence over the national territory, bringing winter conditions.
On Wednesday, the Institute of Meteorology issued Special Notice No. 1 due to the occurrence of rain, showers, and thunderstorms in the western region, associated with a cold front that brings abundant cloud cover and storms.
"The images from the weather radars in Casa Blanca, Havana, and La Bajada in Pinar del Río detect strong storm areas along approximately 500 kilometers from the north of the Yucatan Peninsula to Key West," the report detailed.
