Cuban actor Erdwin Fernández Collado revealed that when he and his wife arrived in the United States nearly three years ago, there were people who turned their backs on them.
In an interview with Dominican YouTuber Dany Pérez, known as Destino Tolk, Erdwin shared that when it became known he was in Miami, colleagues and friends reached out to him and sent money. He also expressed gratitude for the gesture of those he didn't know who made donations as well.
However, she lamented the attitude of others she approached to ask for work in the artistic field, and they denied her, but she refused to reveal any names.
Despite that refusal, he proudly expressed that he has been able to practice his profession, thanks to the PRONYR TV platform, where he has participated in many projects alongside artists he knew from Cuba, such as Tony Salup, Jean Michel Fernández, Lucila Granados, Orlando Fundichely, and Mauricio Casín.
He also confessed that he and his wife work delivering food and that "that pays for the gym."
In the interview, Erdwin recalled the repression he faced in Cuba due to his critical stance against the regime, detailing that he was threatened with death several times. He has recorded these threats, as he took screenshots on his phone.
She also recalled when the daughter of former ruler Raúl Castro, Mariela Castro Espín, shared on her social media the criticism from a regime supporter who accused Erdwin of being a hypocrite for attacking the Cuban government but lacking the courage to wear a Che cap in Miami.
In March 2023, the actor celebrated his first day on the job as a salesman at a well-known furniture store in Miami Gardens, sharing a photo on his social media where he was seen at the store dressed in a suit.
Days earlier, he had lashed out at those who criticize and mock artists who have emigrated to make a living in a job unrelated to their original profession.
"I have seen people worried and even mocking whether the artists living outside of Cuba are working on this or that, as if it were something new and foreign to Cuba, something impure and dishonorable, as if that means you stop being an artist," he wrote.
Erdwin clarified at that time that being an artist is not something you can put on and take off like clothing, emphasizing that "being an artist is for life, from the heart, soul, and spirit," no matter where one works. He also harshly criticized those who go through life trying to control the lives of others.
This was not the first time the actor, son of the esteemed performers Nilda Collado and Erdwin Fernández, made his position clear and expressed his willingness to take on any work. "Any work that needs to be done is welcome," he wrote in another post in April 2022.
