Cuba's Electric Union (UNE) predicts power outages this Sunday due to a generation deficit, which is expected to affect up to 1,070 MW.

According to the official report, on Saturday the service was disrupted starting at 4:51 AM, reaching a peak of 1,298 MW at 6:10 PM. It was restored at 12:42 AM today, but went down again at 6:18 AM. The impact is concentrated in the central-eastern region due to high energy transfers to that area.

At 7:00 AM this Sunday, the deficit reached 390 MW, concentrated from Matanzas to Guantánamo due to high transfer. By noon, the figure rose to 600 MW, with a greater impact in the eastern central region, and during peak hours, it is expected to reach 1,070 MW.

Three units from the thermoelectric plants Nuevitas, Felton, and Renté are out of service. Additionally, four more blocks from the Santa Cruz, Cienfuegos, and Renté thermoelectric plants are undergoing maintenance.

On the other hand, 58 distributed generation power plants, five engines from the Moa plant, and unit 5 of the Mariel thermoelectric plant are out of service due to a lack of fuel, totaling 460 MW affected by this issue.

During peak hours, a recovery of 120 MW from distributed generation plants that are offline due to fuel shortages is expected, along with the activation of five fuel engines from Moa, contributing 70 MW.

The limitations in thermal generation are 288 MW.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blackouts in Cuba and the Electricity Generation Shortfall

Why do blackouts occur in Cuba?

Power outages in Cuba are primarily due to a deficit in electricity generation capacity caused by breakdowns and maintenance in several thermal power plants, as well as a lack of fuel affecting distributed generation plants. These limitations prevent the country from meeting its electricity demand, resulting in constant service interruptions.

What is the current electricity generation deficit in Cuba?

For this Sunday, Cuba’s Electric Union (UNE) is forecasting a deficit of up to 1070 MW during peak hours. This figure highlights the severity of the energy crisis the country is facing, with a demand of 3100 MW and an availability of only 2100 MW.

Which regions of Cuba are most affected by power outages?

The regions most affected by blackouts extend from Matanzas to Guantánamo. The high energy transfer in these areas leads to significant concentrations of service interruptions, exacerbating the situation for residents of these provinces.

What measures is the Cuban government taking to address the energy crisis?

The Cuban government has implemented measures such as scheduled and rotating blackouts to distribute the impact. However, these actions have led to discontent among the population, which is calling for more effective and sustainable solutions to address the energy crisis affecting the country.

How do power outages impact the daily lives of Cubans?

Power outages severely impact daily life in Cuba, disrupting essential activities such as cooking and using appliances. This situation creates frustration and discontent among the population, affecting both personal well-being and the country's economy.
