Amanda Lemus Ortiz, the young girl who at the age of three overcame a complex heart transplant in Spain, received numerous expressions of affection on her birthday, including an emotional message from activist Yamilka Laffita, known on social media as Lara Crofs.

Laffita, who has stood out for his activism in defense of Amanda's right to health, expressed on his social media:

"I believe this is the only reason I have to celebrate, and I will do so because no one can take that joy away from me, not even a tyranny. I will celebrate that Amanda lives in a free, democratic country, where rights matter, and thanks to that, the baby could celebrate her three years."

The activist highlighted the challenges that Amanda's family faced over the past year and expressed gratitude to the Spanish healthcare system for making this new opportunity possible for the little girl.

"This family has had to endure a very difficult year. That's why they deserve every bit of happiness; each moment of joy has come at a high price, but the outcome, thanks to many supportive hands, is reflected in that image. A heartfelt thank you to the doctors in Spain, always."

The message concluded with a warm wish for Amanda:

"Congratulations, beautiful girl of my heart. You deserve all the love and affection in this world. Being able to celebrate your life today is an immense gift, and I hope to continue celebrating for many more years to come. May God protect you, and may all the good energy in the world be with you."

Due to the limitations of the healthcare system in Cuba, Amanda's family worked tirelessly to secure appropriate treatment abroad.

Thanks to the active campaign led by Lafita and the support of the international community, Amanda obtained a humanitarian visa and was transferred to Spain, where her father offered to be a donor for the transplant.

In March 2024, Amanda arrived in Madrid in a very deteriorated state of health. The Spanish doctors, shocked by her condition, noted that precious time had been lost in the treatment of her illness.

On March 15, she underwent a liver transplant at La Paz University Hospital, a successful operation that marked the beginning of her recovery.

Over the following months, Amanda showed remarkable improvement. In June, the doctors removed her IVs and catheters, allowing her to resume a normal life with her parents in Madrid. She started sitting up on her own, babbling words, and taking a few steps, all significant milestones in her development.

However, in November 2024, Amanda experienced complications with her bile duct, which required her readmission to the hospital. After several unsuccessful attempts to place a stent due to the narrowness of the duct, the doctors decided to proceed with surgery to reconstruct the duct and insert the necessary stent for her recovery.

Despite these challenges, Amanda has continued her recovery. In December 2024, an emotional video was shared showing her taking her first steps in the hospital, highlighting her resilience and the hopes of her family and the supportive community around her.

The story of Amanda has mobilized communities both inside and outside of Cuba, united to offer support and solidarity. Her case highlights the importance of international cooperation and mutual backing in difficult times, demonstrating that, with collective effort, it is possible to overcome obstacles and provide hope to those who need it most.
