A new type of theft is spreading across the fields of Cuba, highlighting the level of impunity that crime has reached.

A resident of Alonso de Rojas, a town in the municipality of Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, shared with journalist Alberto Arego what is happening.

"It turns out that there is a modus operandi called KIDNAPPING, not for people, but for objects and animals that criminals steal and then demand a ransom in exchange for money. This is the new way they are trying to live off of those who truly sacrifice for the well-being of their families," he said on Facebook.

"They have stolen pigs and are asking for up to 30,000 pesos for their ransom, and don’t go to the police because they’re not around, or else they’ll kill the animal. Just as they break into houses, they also steal from paladares and then do the same thing," he added.

According to the complainant, nothing can be said to the police because it would only make things worse for the family.

He also asserted that there is no longer any trust in leaving houses unattended, only if it is absolutely necessary to go out, because they take everything.

"They carry everything out of the house, but the most striking part is that they are like ninjas because nobody notices anything when they steal or is afraid to speak up. It's sad what is happening," he lamented.

"My brother-in-law had his dining set, bed, and mattress stolen. He wasn't there when it happened. They haven't asked for money yet because he hasn't gone to the village, but I'm sure they will when he arrives," she emphasized.
