The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded sarcastically to the elected leader Donald Trump's suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of the United States," emphasizing her country's rights over that maritime area.

In an ironic tone, Sheinbaum presented a 17th-century map to highlight Mexico's history and claim over the region, suggesting that instead of accepting Trump's proposal regarding the Gulf, they should change the name of the United States to "Mexican America."

"Let's call it Mexican America. It sounds nice, doesn't it?" expressed Sheinbaum during a press conference, while showing a map from 1607 that indicated the southern United States as part of the old constitution of Apatzingán.

The president emphasized that the Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the UN and that its designation is not subject to arbitrary changes.

The irony of Sheinbaum didn't end there. In her response, she pointed to the misinformation that, according to her, Trump received about the political situation in Mexico.

"Yesterday, President Trump was misinformed that Felipe Calderón and García Luna were still in power in Mexico, but no, the people govern in Mexico," he stated, referring to the current administration and criticizing his predecessors (Calderón and Luna), whom the Mexican left referred to as puppets of the U.S.

Trump's controversial proposal adds to his recent statements about redrawing the map of the Western Hemisphere. This is not the first time the former president has addressed geopolitical issues in a defiant tone; this week, he suggested that Canada should become the "51st state" of the U.S., that he plans to regain control of the Panama Canal, and has made unusual demands such as the cession of Greenland by Denmark.

Although the Gulf of Mexico spans several states in the southeastern United States, for Mexicans, there is no other way to refer to it. This latest proposal adds to the long-standing conflicts between the two countries, which include disputes over border security and trade policies.
