A large fire ravaged the clothing store Yaily’s Fashion this Monday, located in a shopping plaza on the 12,300 block of Quail Roost Drive, in southwest Miami-Dade.
The incident, which originated in the morning, resulted in one person hospitalized for possible smoke inhalation, as well as economic losses of varying significance in at least eight adjacent establishments.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the fire, while the affected merchants face a landscape of uncertainty.
According to testimonies, the fire started around 8:30 a.m., when a call alerted the authorities about the flames, which were spreading rapidly through the front of the establishment.
The fire and rescue teams from Miami-Dade County responded quickly to the call and deployed multiple units to the scene.
“They informed us that the front part of the corner condominium had caught fire and that the flames were spreading quickly. When we arrived, the firefighters were already here, and all that was visible was smoke,” explained Yarelis Rodríguez, a worker from one of the businesses near the affected store, in statements to America Tevé.
Rodríguez explained that the repair costs are already becoming an additional concern.
“The door to our store is completely damaged and cannot be repaired. Right now, someone came and told us that replacing it will cost $1,900. Economically, this is very difficult for everyone,” he added.
The store Yaily’s Fashion was completely charred, with several mannequins moved outside, while two neighboring establishments suffered significant damage due to smoke.
Although the firefighters managed to contain the flames quickly, preventing the fire from spreading throughout the shopping plaza, the economic impact of the fire is severe for the small business owners in the area. The fire not only caused material damage to some facilities but also left the businesses paralyzed, with customers and workers temporarily stranded. Orialis Fernández, another employee of the shopping plaza, voiced her concerns about the cause of the fire.
“There was a power outage in the area early in the morning, around 7:00 am. It's unusual, but that's when I found out what had happened. We don't know if it was an electrical failure or something that exploded,” he pointed out.
According to witnesses, the store Yaily’s Fashion was closed at the time of the fire, which prevented a larger tragedy.
Although there is still no official information, residents and workers speculate that the power outage or a possible electrical failure may have played a key role.
The affected businesses remain closed while the relevant investigations are conducted. The Miami-Dade Fire Department has initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
So far, there has been no information regarding the clinical condition or the identity of the injured person.
Other fires in the area
This is not the only recent fire that has affected Miami-Dade County.
In another incident, which occurred in this case on Sunday morning, a portable heater caused a large fire in a house located at 77th Street and 10th Avenue in the northwest.
That second fire left a 92-year-old mother and her 70-year-old daughter homeless after one of the women plugged the heater into a power strip.
Erika Benítez, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Fire Department, took advantage of that unfortunate incident to warn residents about the risks of heating equipment.
“It is essential to inspect and prepare heating equipment before using it, especially during the colder months of the year,” he noted.
Local authorities have urged the population to take extra precautions against potential electrical and heating risks, reminding them of the importance of conducting regular inspections of the electrical systems in homes and businesses.
A call has also been made to keep fire extinguishers in accessible locations and in good condition as a preventive measure in case of emergencies.
