A woman died and two men were injured in a tragic traffic accident that occurred this Wednesday about ten kilometers west of the city of Camagüey, at kilometer 555 of the Central Highway, according to reports from local state media.
The incident involved a tourist vehicle, a Kia Picanto, coming from Havana and heading to the eastern part of the country.
The driver of the car lost control on a dangerous curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, crash through a barbed wire fence, and end up overturned within the grounds of the Jesús Suárez Gayol cooperative, as reported by the Facebook profile of Televisión Camagüey.
The incident occurred around noon, and witnesses report that the speed and the conditions of the curve may have been determining factors.
The identity of the deceased victim, as well as that of the two injured individuals, has not been disclosed.
The driver and another passenger sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken to the Manuel Ascunce Domenech provincial hospital, where they received immediate medical attention.
The citizen Felybequy Fernández Carpintor -a direct witness to the event- reported to the mentioned media that he was traveling on the road when he came across the overturned car and heard the cries for help from one of the survivors.
Without hesitation, Fernández, along with another person nearby, rushed to the scene and managed to overturn the vehicle to free the trapped occupants.
Subsequently, they made an emergency call to notify the relevant authorities.
Antonio Saavedra, supervisor inspector of the company Transur, confirmed that the crashed vehicle belongs to the Kia brand, model Picanto, and was rented in the vicinity of José Martí International Airport in Havana.
According to their statements, the vehicle was in suitable condition at the time it was delivered.
The Central Highway in that section is known for its dangerous curves and has been the scene of several similar accidents in the past.
Local authorities are investigating the causes of the incident to determine if factors such as speeding, mechanical failures, or terrain conditions played a role.
As of the closing of this report, no further details about the accident have emerged. There is also no official confirmation regarding whether one or more of the vehicle's occupants resided abroad.
A tragic January on the roads of Camagüey
In the two weeks since the start of the year, the province of Camagüey has experienced a high level of accidents on its roads.
"Only 14 days into 2025, there have been four traffic accidents with fatal outcomes in Camagüey. How horrific, my God!" noted a user on social media, referring, indeed, to this and three other accidents that occurred recently in that province.
A tragic accident occurred on the morning of January 2 on the road connecting Camagüey with Santa Cruz del Sur, when a passenger truck overturned on a bridge known as El Francés.
The incident resulted in one fatality and 63 injuries, including 13 minors. The event took place when the driver of the private truck lost control of the vehicle.
A little more than a week later, on the night of January 10, a tragic accident on the road to the municipality of Florida resulted in two fatalities and more than 50 injured following a collision of two buses.
Among the fatalities is the driver of one of the buses, who died at the scene of the accident. The second victim died after being transported to the "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" University Hospital.
Finally, an accident that occurred on January 12, in the Monte Carlos neighborhood of Camagüey, left three teenagers injured after a collision between a motorcycle and a horse-drawn cart. The young girls, approximately 15 years old, were riding on the motorcycle at the time of the impact.
