An accident that occurred this Sunday in the Monte Carlos neighborhood of Camagüey left three teenagers injured after a collision between a motorcycle and a horse-drawn cart.
The young girls, around 15 years old, were riding on the scooter at the time of the impact, according to reports from the Facebook group 'Traffic Accidents in Cuba'.
The incident adds to a worrying trend of accidents in Cuba involving animal-drawn vehicles and motorized means.
In November 2024, a cart without lights caused a serious accident on a road in Ciego de Ávila, resulting in significant material damages and a heated debate about the lack of regulation of animal transport in Cuba.
At the beginning of the same year, a teenager lost their life in Guantánamo following a similar collision between a car and a horse-drawn cart, highlighting the danger these means of transportation pose when they operate without adequate safety measures.
In July 2024, three people, including a four-year-old child, died in a collision between a Yutong bus and a horse-drawn cart in Granma. The traffic accident occurred in the locality of Las Mangas, northwest of the city of Bayamo. The bus was on the Bayamo-Habana route. An accident involving the bus resulted in three fatalities, including a minor.
On December 17th, in Camagüey, a tourist car collided with another cart, fortunately with no injuries reported in the incident.
This new accident that occurred in the Camagüey neighborhood of Monte Carlo reinforces the urgency of implementing stricter road safety measures in Cuba, both for motor vehicles and for animal-drawn transportation, as well as improving road conditions to prevent future tragedies.
