Payment of tariffs in dollars for certain imports in Cuba

On January 1, new provisions of Decree-Law 22 of 2020 came into effect, which regulates non-commercial imports, meaning those made by individuals or legal entities for personal consumption or specific use.

According to the new measure, the payment of tariffs in dollars has been imposed on non-commercial imports of certain items.

These modifications primarily affect the payment conditions for customs duties, the calculation methods, and the currency accepted for paying customs fees.

Among the most significant changes was the requirement to pay tariffs in freely convertible currency (MLC), such as the United States dollar (USD), for certain imported products.

Additionally, the possibility of applying specific tariffs based on the quantity of imported products was introduced, rather than calculating only a percentage of their value (ad valorem duty).
