A Cuban resident in Havana is urgently seeking help to undergo surgery for a giant hernia in her abdomen.
Grisel Blanco, a resident of the La Víbora neighborhood in the municipality of Diez de Octubre, shared photos on her Facebook wall that show the delicate state of her health, as the hernia occupies practically her entire abdomen.
"I no longer know where to turn. I am an oncology patient, and I urgently need a visceral contact mesh so I can be operated on urgently," she said.
"I have a giant incisional hernia and I have no abdominal wall, which is why this type of mesh is so important," she clarified.
The patient explained that, based on her condition and the size of the protrusion, she needs a visceral contact mesh measuring 30 × 30 cm.
An incisional hernia or eventration occurs as a result of poor healing of an incision made in the abdominal wall during previous surgery. The tissues of the abdominal wall give way under intra-abdominal pressure, and the organs protrude from the cavity in the form of a bulge.
It is one of the most common complications that arise after any type of abdominal surgery. It can occur shortly after the procedure or even years later.
The visceral contact mesh for the treatment of hernias and eventrations has two sides: one made of monofilament polypropylene to integrate with the wall, and the other made of Teflon film, to prevent the formation of adhesions with the viscera.
