A large yacht caught fire in the early hours of Sunday while anchored at the back dock of the nightclub Booby Trap on the River, located at 3615 NW South River Drive, in Miami.
The incident prompted the immediate evacuation of customers and employees from the dock and the nearby entertainment venue, with no injuries reported.
Local 10 News reported that the yacht was 95 feet long and was rented by the well-known music producer Metro Boomin. The vessel docked around 3 a.m., but 15 minutes later, club employees noticed smoke coming from inside the boat.
Michael Marhefka, Security Director of Booby Trap on the River commented to the press: “The boat docked and they were on it for maybe 30 minutes at the pier when we noticed what sounded like fire alarms. When we looked, we saw smoke inside.”
About ten guests, including Metro Boomin, and five crew members were successfully evacuated by the club staff.
More than 30 units from the Miami-Dade Fire Department were dispatched to the scene to combat the flames, using water and foam both from the ground and from the water. At one point, firefighters used a ladder truck to tackle the blaze from the air.
Despite the efforts, the yacht sank in the Miami River shortly before 7 a.m. The charred remnants of the vessel remain tied to the dock while emergency teams develop a plan for its removal and prevent potential fuel spills.
The fire attracted a crowd of onlookers, who described the incident as terrifying due to the enormous flames and the rapid spread of the fire. Dozens of dancers and club patrons were evacuated amidst the chaos. The cause of the fire is under police investigation.
