The administration of Donald Trump canceled on Tuesday the travel plans of thousands of refugees who had already been approved to enter the United States, as part of a series of executive orders that strengthen the immigration restrictions promised during his campaign.
This suspension affects more than 10,000 refugees who had completed a lengthy and thorough admission process, and who already had flights scheduled for the coming weeks.
Among those affected are more than 1,600 Afghans who had collaborated with the U.S. military effort, as well as family members of active-duty military personnel.
These refugees had waited years to obtain approval to relocate their lives in the U.S. after fleeing war and persecution in their home countries.
A few days ago, Trump announced this pause in the refugee resettlement program as part of his plans to restrict immigration, setting a deadline until January 27 to allow the arrival of certain refugees.
However, in an email sent on Tuesday, the U.S. agency responsible for the admission and arrival process of refugees reported that "refugee arrivals to the United States have been suspended until further notice".
Shawn VanDiver, a veteran of the Navy and leader of the #AfghanEvac group, which supports the resettlement efforts for Afghans, expressed his concern over the suspension of the program.
"It is alarming that the Trump administration has halted refugee flights so quickly, leaving thousands of Afghan allies in a state of fear and uncertainty," he stated, urging for clear communication with the affected families.
Despite this pause, the special immigrant visa (SIV) program for Afghans who worked directly with the U.S. government does not appear to be affected by the order.
The decision, which originally had a one-week deadline, was made sooner without a clear explanation for the change in schedule.
The State Department has referred questions about the matter to the White House, while organizations that assist refugees argue that this type of legal immigration should be supported, given the rigorous background checks refugees must undergo before arriving in the country.
