The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the detention of 956 undocumented immigrants in a single day, the highest number recorded under the administration of Donald Trump.
The operation, overseen by the "border czar" Tom Homan and other high-ranking officials, took place on Sunday in Chicago, marking an intensification of immigration control measures following the national emergency declaration at the southern border of the country.
According to data from ICE, the daily average of arrests of non-citizens with criminal records or pending charges during the last fiscal year was 310.7.
The figure reached on Sunday represents a significant increase and, according to Axios, reflects the hardline policy adopted by the Trump administration.
Reinforcement of operations in Chicago
ICE reported that the operation in Chicago was supported by several federal agencies, including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the United States Marshals Service.
The stated objective of these raids was to "enforce immigration law and ensure public and national safety" by removing foreigners with criminal records.
In a post on the social media platform X, ICE shared images of Tom Homan alongside acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, overseeing the operations.
Reactions and concerns
Tom Homan declared on the program "This Week" from ABC that arrest figures "will steadily increase," focusing on threats to national and public security.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, affirmed that the local police are not cooperating with these operations and urged residents to be aware of their constitutional rights.
The recent actions are part of a series of executive orders signed by Trump after assuming his second term, which include the deployment of troops at the border and conducting raids in churches and schools.
