Boncó Quiñongo faced criticism on social media for not traveling to Washington to participate in the demonstration against the Cuban dictatorship called by the influencer Alexander Otaola.
The Cuban comedian, in a live broadcast, which was shared on Instagram by the profile Papel Encara, lashed out at those who questioned him and compared them to those in Cuba who controlled people to force them to attend marches and parades in support of the revolution.
“No quiero que ahora me digan que si no estoy en Washington como me dicen por ahí porque es lo mismo que sucedía en Cuba, que te decían no vayas al trabajo, hay marcha, y uno del comité apuntando con una libretica a los que iban, a los que no iban, entonces, ¿qué estamos haciendo?”, cuestionó Boncó.
It seems that one of the criticisms was for promoting a travel agency between Cuba and Punta Cana, and Boncó clarified that it is not an agency that profits for the regime on the island but rather seeks to reunite Cuban families separated in the Dominican Republic.
“I wholeheartedly support the people who are there, but if we do the same thing they did to us in Cuba by judging who went and who didn't, it starts the same division, which I do not agree with. I have my own way of thinking about life (...) If my enemy is in front of me and you are in the same fight against the dictatorship as I am, I have no reason to be at odds with you just because you don’t think the same way I do regarding the methods I choose to overthrow the dictatorship,” the comedian stated.
According to Boncó, Cubans are so proud that they discredit each other when they do not think alike, while the common enemy, which is the dictatorship, remains there "watching us divided and continues to defeat us".
On January 28th, dozens of Cubans gathered at Lafayette Square, in front of the White House, to urge President Donald Trump to increase his pressure on the Cuban regime and demand freedom for Cuba and political prisoners.
