U.S. authorities arrested two Cuban citizens in Miami on Tuesday, accused of operating a network for trafficking Chinese migrants into the United States.
According to the Chief Agent of the U.S. Border Patrol for the Miami Sector, Jeffrey Dinise, officers under his command and others from the Coral Gables police responded to a maritime smuggling incident, arresting two Cuban smugglers and 26 illegal immigrants from China.
The news outlet NBC Miami reported that undocumented individuals were apprehended while traveling in two vans. They were transporting 17 men and 9 women of Chinese origin, in the areas of 88th Street and Old Cutler Road, and 11600 Old Cutler Road.
In the scene, the police recovered a firearm, said the head of that institution, Ed Hudak.
"They landed basically in the same area, the two trucks took different directions", said Hudak. "I can't say for sure that they are related, but this is one of those situations that was very similar to what we had two weeks ago", referring to a similar case that occurred earlier.
Last week, a joint operation by several security agencies in Coral Gables concluded with the arrest of 28 individuals, including migrants from China (21), Cuba (3), Ecuador (1), and Brazil (1), as part of an investigation into a possible case of smuggling or human trafficking.
Four of the detainees, three of whom are Cuban, are under investigation as alleged organizers of the network.
"No place for human trafficking exists in the city of Coral Gables, let alone in the state of Florida. We must directly address illegal immigration, utilizing our experienced state and local agencies," said the special agent in charge of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in Miami, John Vecchio.
