The Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant, the largest and most important in Cuba, has once again disconnected from the National Electric System (SEN) due to a malfunction this Monday, just 24 hours after reconnecting.
A brief note from the Electric Union (UNE) on social media indicated that the outage occurred at 19:39 and that the cause was a leakage in the boiler, which is one of its recurring faults.
The Matanzas journalist José Miguel Solís reported that, in a conversation with engineer Rubén Campos Olmos, the general director of the block, "they began to cool down the boiler to inspect it as soon as possible and rectify the malfunction."
"In the event that there is not a major break in the water lines, it could be preliminarily estimated that it may be possible to resume service during peak demand hours on Friday, added the official spokesperson."
Solís specified that "other corrective tasks will be undertaken with the support of brigades from the Electric Power Maintenance Company, which have indeed been mobilized to address the breakdown."
As usual, hundreds of Cubans took to social media to express their outrage over yet another breakdown at the Guiteras.
And the thermal power plant in Matanzas had synchronized with the National Electric System on Sunday at 4:48 p.m., after having gone out of service earlier that same morning, due to a fault in the control supply at a nearby substation.
The forecast for power outages during peak hours this Monday was 1,545 MW, a figure that has become common in recent days, marked by significant deficits in electricity generation.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Energy Crisis in Cuba and the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant
Why did the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant disconnect from the National Electric System again?
The Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant has disconnected from the system due to a leak in its boiler, which is one of its recurring issues. This situation has worsened the energy crisis in Cuba, which is already facing a significant deficit in electricity generation.
What are the consequences of the disconnection of the Guiteras thermoelectric plant for the Cuban electrical system?
The shutdown of the Guiteras power plant significantly increases the generation deficit, leading to prolonged blackouts in several regions of the country. This deficit reflects the obsolescence of the power generation fleet and the lack of proper maintenance of the electrical infrastructure in Cuba.
What measures are being taken to address the malfunctions at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant?
To address the breakdown in the Guiteras boiler, cooling of the boiler has begun for a quick inspection. Teams from the Electric Power Plant Maintenance Company have been mobilized to carry out corrective tasks, with the aim of reintegrating the plant into the system during peak demand hours on Friday, provided the issue is not severe.
How does the current situation at the Guiteras thermal power plant affect Cubans?
The disconnection of the Guiteras has intensified the prolonged blackouts that were already affecting the population, especially in the eastern provinces. This issue reflects the energy crisis facing Cuba, characterized by a generation deficit and aging electrical infrastructure.
