Two people died in the United States after a small plane crashed on Saturday night shortly after taking off from Covington Municipal Airport, located about 55 kilometers (35 miles) east of Atlanta, Georgia.

The aircraft, a Rockwell Commander, took off around 11:00 p.m. and shortly after lost communication with the control tower, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

There were no further signs of the plane after its takeoff.

At 11:40 p.m., agents of the Covington Police Department located the plane's wreckage in a forest north of the airport runway, according to the agency AFP.

At the site, they found the two people who were traveling on board, who were declared dead at the scene of the accident.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were James Hardee, 62, and Janet Hardee, 59, both residents of Covington, Georgia.

No details have been provided about who was piloting the aircraft at the time of the incident.

No images from the accident area have been released either.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated an investigation to clarify what happened.
