The accident involving the Delta Airlines aircraft that occurred this Monday following a rough landing at Toronto airport, has resulted in new images being shared on social media by witnesses of the incident.
A post from the profile of X (formerly Twitter) @airwaysmagazine, featured a video recorded from the cockpit of a plane that was parked on the runway at Pearson International Airport at the time of the incident.
Presumably recorded by a crew member, the video shows the moment when the Delta Airlines plane touches down and the pilot loses control of the aircraft, which appears to skid on the ice on the runway, ultimately veering off, destabilizing, losing its wings upon impact, and flipping over in the midst of a huge explosion with flames.
Two other videos were recorded by passengers flying on Delta Air Lines flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, and show the moments following the accident and the hurried evacuation of the passengers from the aircraft, assisted by crew members and other passengers who acted as good samaritans.
The shock following the incident is evident among the passengers, some of whom can still be seen strapped into their seats, head down, as the fuselage of the aircraft was left with the wheels facing up. In one of the videos, firefighters can be seen putting out the fire while passengers are still being evacuated from the aircraft.
Fifteen people, including a child, were injured, but none of the injuries are considered life-threatening, according to the Regional Paramedic Services of Peel municipality.
Three people sustained serious injuries: a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s, while another 12 were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. Initially, eight people were reported injured, one of whom was in critical condition.
The accident occurred around 2:45 PM (local time), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the U.S. stated in a preliminary report. The plane lost its wings, likely upon impact with the ground, which was covered in snow and ice due to a winter storm.
Press reports indicated that the causes of the accident are still unknown, which occurred amid a snowstorm and strong gusts of wind in the region. According to Environment Canada, winds reached 65 km/h on land, and blizzard conditions were reported, said the AP agency. The temperature was -8.6 degrees Celsius.
Hours before the dramatic accident, the airport terminal had shared a photo on X taken in the morning in an area of the airfield and reported that cleanup was ongoing after the storm over the weekend.
