The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, stated this Sunday that he was willing to resign as president if it meant achieving peace for his country or joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The statement was made during a press conference in which he was asked if he was willing to resign if it would guarantee peace for Ukraine.
"Yes, it guarantees peace for Ukraine, if they really need me to resign, I am willing to. I can exchange it for NATO," said the 47-year-old leader, adding that his dream is to achieve an end to the war.
In his appearance, he emphasized that he is focused on Ukraine's security right now, not 20 years from now, and added that it is not his "dream" to continue being president for decades.
He also described his approach with the Donald Trump administration as "pragmatic."
"There is no room for emotions here, he said in response to a question about Trump's comments regarding him. Obviously, I would not say that President Trump's words about me are compliments, to say the least."
At the press conference, he also invited the President of the United States to visit Ukraine and expressed his willingness to travel to U.S. territory to meet with the country's leader.
Although he appreciated the support from the Biden and Trump administrations, he stated that he wants understanding and security guarantees from President Trump to help Ukraine.
His statements come after Russia launched 267 drones against Ukraine, in an unprecedented attack on the eve of the third anniversary of the war conflict between both countries.
Zelenski himself claimed that his citizens live under "aerial terror" and referred to a meeting among European leaders that will take place in Ukraine this Monday to discuss the strategy "for the coming weeks." "There are some strong decisions to be made," he noted.
The path to ending the conflict has been immersed in an atmosphere of tension.
Recently, the Ukrainian leader received a series of labels from his American counterpart, who went so far as to call him a "dictator without elections."
Trump called him a "modestly" successful comedian, and accused him of having convinced the United States to spend 350 billion dollars to enter a war that it could not win and that should have never started.
The Republican leader has claimed that he is successfully negotiating an end to the war with Russia but has excluded Ukraine from the discussions held by U.S. and Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, regarding the conclusion of the war with Russia.
Last Tuesday, Trump stated that Ukraine could have avoided the conflict if it had reached an agreement.
Zelensky, for his part, warned that the American president is a victim of misinformation promoted by Moscow, which affects his perception of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
In an address to the press, the Ukrainian leader presented a controversial proposal from the United States, stating that Ukraine should hand over 50% of its natural resources without receiving any security guarantees in return.
