The Museum of the Cuban Diaspora in Miami is showcasing an exhibit dedicated to one of the great Cuban painters of the 20th century, Antonia Eiriz., from late December until April of this year.
"Antonia Eiriz: The Eye of the Sibyl", features 20 of her most significant works, sourced from private collections outside of Cuba.
According to the review on the page of the Museum, the exhibition is curated by art critic Janet Batet.
The exhibition features a selection of works by Eiriz ranging from the 1960s to the 1990s, providing an unprecedented insight into the creative journey of one of Cuba's most controversial artists.
Inspired by Batet's essay, "In the Eye of the Sibyl," Eiriz is presented as an "oracular" figure whose work alters, critiques, and bears witness to the oppressive realities of her time.
Drawing inspiration from the mythological figure of the Sibyl, who foresaw events with clarity, the Museum of the Cuban Diaspora showcases the works of Eiriz, which encourage reflection and awareness of the latent repression and violence in the Cuban revolution.
"The work of Eiriz is not only a mirror of her own trauma, but also a collective wound that resonates in many Cuban and diasporic voices," said Janet Batet.
In his words, Eiriz's response to the censorship was not silence, but a reconfiguration of his practice: "One that
speaks of resilience, adaptability, and challenge."
With the exhibition, the art critic presents Eiriz as a voice of resistance within her political context.
The work of Antonia Eiriz (1929-1995) is permeated by anguish, suffering, and the social realities of her time—themes she explored throughout her career as a painter.
She was one of the artists who integrated the sociopolitical changes that occurred on the island following Fidel Castro's rise to power into her work.
His critical stance earned him the regime's censorship. In 1966, as an act of resistance, he decided to stop painting.
