The Cuban-American activist Carlos Lazo responded to criticism demanding a clearer stance regarding the Cuban regime.

In an extensive post on his social media, Lazo recalled how, since his youth in 1980s Cuba, he was pressured to "define himself", a demand that, according to him, has only served to divide Cuban society.

"Go away!", "Disgusting!", "Get lost!", "Die!", "Traitor", "Define yourself", wrote Lazo, quoting the phrases that have been directed at him both on social media and in the street.

"That demand haunts and terrifies me. It's a recurring nightmare. I didn't 'define' myself until later," she stated.

The controversy surrounding Lazo has intensified in recent days, following his allegation that the Cuban authorities have obstructed the direct delivery of medical supplies and powdered milk to pediatric hospitals through his organization Puentes de Amor.

Lazo stated that the Cuban government had allegedly prohibited several health institutions from receiving the aid organized by his team, which caused dissatisfaction among those who have supported him in his activism.

"We have tried to clarify this situation at various levels, with institutions and officials. The responses are evasive," Lazo stated, visibly upset with the lack of official clarity.

In response to these statements, the official from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), Yilian Jiménez Expósito, denied that access for Lazo and his group to the hospitals has been prohibited, although she acknowledged that on some occasions they have been denied entry for failing to coordinate their visits in advance.

In light of the attacks he has received over this controversy, Lazo reiterated his rejection of extremism and reminded that throughout his life, he has been labeled both a "worm" and a "communist."

According to him, it was during the Iraq war in 2004 when he finally found his true definition: "There, I defined myself. In that moment. While I was embracing that father, grandfather, brother, neighbor. So stop bothering me and asking me to define myself. I already did! I stand with the Cuban children."

His stance has generated divided reactions. While some accuse him of evading a direct condemnation of the Cuban regime, others, like the singer Israel Rojas, have come to his defense, calling it "deeply unfair" to suggest that Lazo is lying about the obstacles he faces in his humanitarian work.

Despite the criticism and difficulties, Lazo assures that he will continue his mission to help Cubans and promote reconciliation between those on the island and the diaspora.

"Neither regulations, nor misunderstandings, nor obstacles will stop us from continuing to advance this work. This is a work of love. Love is imperishable," he concluded.
