The Cuban regime announced the celebration of the XXVI International Agroindustrial Food Fair, FIAGROP 2025, to attract investments and reactivate the food production, which has been severely depressed in the country.

According to information from the official page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba (MINREX), FIAGROP will take place from March 17 to 23 in Havana and will be organized by the Agricultural Fair Company, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Food Industry, the AZCUBA Business Group, and the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Cuba.

"FIAGROP 2025 is designed with extensive exhibition areas, a space for interaction among participants through product and service exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and product launches, which will allow for the discovery of business opportunities and investments, as well as the scientific potential related to the sector," noted the Government's statement.

In the official communication, they urged companies, businesspeople, producers, and marketers to participate in the event at the Rancho Boyeros Fairgrounds.

Among the exhibitors will be technicians from the Camagüey Agricultural Workshops Company (ETAC), who promoted in the local press of that province two models of brush cutters, which could be used for "clearing weeds and marabú cutting".

Thus, it was stated to Adelante by José Manuel Fariña Otaño, the general director of the entity, who specified that it is a modified model, with high demand in the country "due to its quality, durability, and strength."

He argued that if they had all the "guarantees" for raw materials, they would be able to produce 15 or 20 units every month.

In a desperate attempt to boost production and revive the industry, the regime has once again called on FIAGROP while acknowledging the failure in food production, admitting that "the results we have achieved today do not meet the needs of the population."

However, the regime appears to be seeking new strategies to shift the blame for the economic and agricultural disaster.

The Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, spoke about the necessity for each municipality to achieve its own "food sovereignty."

During a government visit to the province of Mayabeque, Marrero emphasized that "the safest food we will have will be the food we are able to produce." According to Granma, the prime minister urged each municipality to develop its own agricultural strategy to achieve the "longed-for municipal autonomy."

Frequently Asked Questions about the International Agro-industrial Food Fair and the Cuban Economy

What is the objective of the International Agro-industrial Food Fair FIAGROP 2025?

The main objective of FIAGROP 2025 is to attract investments and reactivate food production in Cuba, given the critical state of the country's agro-industrial economy. The fair aims to provide a space for exchange among participants, presenting business opportunities and scientific potential in the agricultural and food sectors.

What measures is the Cuban government taking to address the current economic crisis?

The Cuban government has implemented a new package of economic measures aimed at "correcting distortions" and "re-boosting the economy" in 2025. Notable actions include the updating of electricity rates, the establishment of centralized retail prices for basic goods, and the use of prepaid cards for fuel purchases. However, these measures have had a limited impact so far.

How is the energy crisis affecting food production in Cuba?

The energy crisis in Cuba is severely impacting food production. Blackouts and the lack of energy affect the production chain, causing, for instance, collected milk to arrive sour at processing plants. This is part of a broader issue of shortages of supplies and resources that is affecting the country's agricultural production.

¿Qué estrategias está considerando el régimen cubano para mejorar la producción agrícola?

The Cuban regime is promoting "food sovereignty" at the municipal level, urging each municipality to develop its own agricultural strategy. Furthermore, they are seeking foreign investments to improve agricultural infrastructure and have received funding from the FAO to increase food production through a circular economy approach.
