Two trucks loaded with refrigerant products collided this Sunday on the Central Highway in Camagüey, due to the "poor condition of the road", but no casualties were reported, announced the Civil Defense of Guáimaro in a statement.
The accident occurred at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, at kilometer 644 of the Central Highway, in front of the integrated farm "Así será," belonging to the Rectángulo Agricultural Company, and resulted in a spill of hydrocarbons and oil, according to the official statement published on Facebook.
The preliminary report from the Civil Defense indicated that, due to the poor condition of the road, an international truck rented from the province of Cienfuegos, heading to Santiago de Cuba, collided with a Renault truck belonging to UCM, a company based in Havana, which was also traveling to the eastern province.
The two heavy vehicles were transporting refrigerant products—shipments that apparently suffered no damage; however, due to the accident, "hydrocarbon and oil were spilled," authorities indicated.
In the published photos, it can be observed that one of the trucks suffered severe damage to the chassis, the hood, and the cabin.
The drivers and passengers were taken to Enrique Armando Cardoso Hospital for treatment, but they showed no injuries and were in "good health," the statement assured.
The Sibanicú Fire Department responded to the scene of the incident to clear the roadway.
The road was closed to traffic, and the agricultural company set up a detour through the "Así será" farm while awaiting the arrival of a tow truck to remove the broken trailer from the site.
So far, the extent of the material losses from the accident has not been disclosed.
Cuban authorities have consistently pointed to drivers as the main culprits behind traffic accidents occurring in the country, while downplaying the poor condition of the roads as a significant cause of these incidents.
Precisely this Monday, the Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, stated that the human factor remains the primary cause of accidents in Cuba, with alarming figures: 92% of accidents, 98% of deaths, and 91% of injuries.
In January, a trailer loaded with chicken overturned in the locality of Río Piedras, in the municipality of Guanabacoa, Havana. The incident occurred on a curve of a narrow and poorly paved road, near the intersection of Monumental and the Santa María del Rosario road, suggesting that the condition of the road, along with excessive speed, could have been the causes of the accident.
