Defective lights on Fifth Avenue in Havana pose a danger and confusion

"It's like driving inside a nightclub," a driver reported.

A Cuban shared a video this week on his Facebook profile, showcasing an unusual scene while driving through Fifth Avenue in Havana, in the exclusive neighborhood of Miramar. In his footage, he captured a curious and dangerous visual effect created by the malfunctioning street lighting in the area.

"It's like an urban installation on Fifth Avenue tonight. The work is titled: 'How to Drive Inside a Nightclub,'" ironized Manuel Viera, a lawyer by profession, while describing the unusual experience.

According to his account, at the Playa bus stop, the lack of lighting contrasted with the faulty streetlights, creating a flickering effect that, instead of beautifying the environment, was confusing and hazardous for drivers.

"Everything is in blackout, the strobe lights on the street with a cheerful flicker invite you to dance. The truth is, that's how it is right now in a section in front of what used to be Coney Island, on 5th Avenue. It creates a strange visual effect that I can't explain; you have to experience it," he explained.

Viera also warned about the danger this situation poses for those passing through the area, as the constant blinking of the lights hampers visibility and could lead to accidents.

"The truth is that it is quite complicated and even dangerous to go underneath that in a car while trying to drive," he pointed out.

Fifth Avenue is one of the most iconic and well-preserved streets in Havana, a daily route for foreign diplomats and regime leaders.

It is one of the best paved and lit streets in the capital, so the poor condition of those LED lamps has caused surprise and criticism among residents and regular drivers.
