The Cuban Fire Department managed to control a fire reported inside the Amadeo Roldán Theater in Havana this Friday, which was apparently caused by vandalism.

The National Concert Music Center announced on Facebook that thanks to the quick intervention of the Fire Department, the fire was controlled immediately, with no material damages or injuries reported.

A statement signed by Indira Fajardo, president of the Cuban Institute of Music, indicates that the fire was a result of vandalism committed by individuals unrelated to the entity.

Authorities have assured that additional security measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents from happening again, without mentioning that several homeless individuals have settled in that facility, abandoned by the government, in the Cuban capital.

The official called for the protection of iconic cultural spaces such as the Amadeo Roldán Theatre, but failed to mention that it has been in total neglect by the authorities for years, to the point that several of its areas have turned into a forest and now serves as a shelter for homeless individuals.

Last year, a social media post revealed that vegetation was overtaking the Amadeo Roldán, the former headquarters of the Pro-Arte Musical society, and that the majestic structure was languishing before the nostalgic eyes of heritage enthusiasts in the Cuban capital.

Pedro Luis García, one of those admirers of ancient beauties, deeply lamented in April that the architectural gem “is becoming a forest where garbage grows and elements hide in its ruins.”
