The Cuban regime announced a new campaign against drugs in Havana from Monday, March 17, to Saturday, March 22, which promises both confrontational and preventive measures.

This is the Third Drug Prevention Exercise in the capital, which the government has designed to try to curb the spread of drugs, the presence of which on Cuban streets has grown alarmingly in recent years.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, it is planned to conduct exemplary trials, community investigations, checks in pharmacies and other substance stores, as well as to strengthen control at border crossings and checkpoints on the roads throughout the week.

In addition, preventive interventions will be conducted in 57 educational centers, meetings with patients dealing with addictions, educational talks, discussions in neighborhoods, and community gatherings.

The exercise involves the Ministries of Education and Public Health, the Attorney General's Office, the Supreme Court, and the CDR, among other agencies and organizations.

The government insists on its "commitment" to the fight against drugs, with measures that are, in many cases, delayed responses to a scourge that has been deeply affecting Cuban society for some time, largely fueled by the lack of effective action from the authorities.

During the preparatory meeting for the exercise, the importance of "reaching the neighborhood" with preventive actions was emphasized. However, in many of these neighborhoods, the situation has already exceeded any last-minute preventive efforts.

The spread of drugs in communities is not a recent phenomenon, but rather the result of years of neglect towards the factors that contribute to their expansion, such as the lack of economic opportunities, the deterioration of social services, and the inadequacy of effective public policies in addiction prevention.

Once again, the government is resorting to the participation of the CDR and other mass organizations, while state policies have failed to control the drug black market that has spread across the Island.

Police operations seem overly focused on appearance and insufficiently aimed at effectively addressing a problem that particularly affects the youth.

This Third Exercise of Prevention and Response to Drug-Related Illicit Activities is merely an attempt to mitigate the damage of a system that has been unable to manage the rise in addictions in Cuba, without a profound transformation of public policies that address the social, economic, and political causes of the crisis.
